Cardigan Knitwear, founded in 2024 by Alexander Lewis, is an alternative approach to knitwear. For Lewis, knitwear always felt like an accidental path. Approaching the craft with a pattern cutter’s eye, more familiar with the drape of cloth than the logic of a stitch, he found something unexpectedly adventurous in the medium.

Having found knitwear at the core of his work, but having arrived at that place from a different angle, it felt like it was knitwear, but not as he knew it.  It’s straightforward, but also flipped on its head.

During a hiatus from design, Lewis began a deeply personal journey to find his right road. Through an exploration of new forms of expression and self-discovery, a direct connection to yarn and hand-making began to emerge. A lifelong love of curation and an obsessive focus on detail finally rose to the surface.

Embracing this new direction was revealing. It was a tactile, luxurious world, but one that demanded a new kind of patience.

He learned that the only way out is through and the only way forward was to create.

The only option was to refocus: to choose needles, knits and stitches, embroidery, and string. Cardigan Knitwear is a sanctuary for those who share that obsessive eye—a world where the desire to collect creativity and dedication to detail in all its forms meets comfort and warmth.
